Privacy in travel, hotels and short-term rentals

Away from home you lose control over the environment, but you need not lose control over your privacy. Hotel rooms, suites and high-end rentals are classic settings for opportunistic and targeted surveillance.

Why travel is the vulnerable moment

At home you control who enters, what stays, and who has access. When traveling, all of that changes hands. The room has been occupied by dozens of people, the holiday rental belongs to the host, and the venue's staff move through the space when you are not there.

For those with exposure, there is also the targeted risk: adversaries who know your itinerary and prepare the environment before you arrive. Reservations made in your name, predictable lodging and published schedules turn travel into a window of opportunity.

Hidden cameras: the most common threat

The most frequent threat in lodging is not the sophisticated microphone: it is the hidden camera. They disguise themselves in smoke detectors, alarm clocks, chargers, USB outlets, frames and decorative objects, often aimed at the bed or the bathroom.

A personal inspection helps: look for objects pointed at private areas, search for the glint of a lens with a light, be wary of anything that seems out of place or 'extra.' But lay inspection has clear limits, and that is where professional verification comes in for stays that truly matter.

When an advance sweep is worthwhile

For sensitive stays, critical meetings held off-site, or extended seasons in high-end rentals, it makes sense to sweep the environment before occupancy. A team checks the suite, the yacht or the rented residence and releases it clean for you.

We bring the same layers of the fixed sweep to the temporary environment: spectrum analysis with the Aaronia SPECTRAN V6 and Rohde & Schwarz FSH8, non-linear junction detection with the REI ORION 2.4 HX, FLIR thermal and physical inspection. The logic is to occupy a space that has already been verified, not to trust to chance.

Routine hygiene away from home

Some practices reduce risk without requiring equipment. Avoid discussing truly sensitive matters in the room; prefer open, unpredictable settings. Be wary of open Wi-Fi and of devices the venue offers already connected. Do not leave documents, screens and conversations in the line of sight of cameras that may exist.

Reduce predictability too: when possible, avoid announcing in advance where and when you will be. Much targeted surveillance depends on knowing your itinerary far enough ahead to prepare the ground.

The case of mobile assets

Yachts, jets and armored vehicles deserve their own attention. They are environments of high informational value, frequented by crews and contractors, and subjected to maintenance where third parties have prolonged access. With each access window, the risk renews.

For these assets we recommend sweeps after maintenance, before sensitive trips and on a periodic cadence. We work discreetly, by appointment, in Brazil and abroad, so that the space in which you move is as trustworthy as your home.

You may be under surveillance right now.
