Why DIY detectors and anti-bug apps give a false sense of security

The cheap gadget that promises to find cameras and the app that swears it detects bugs usually deliver the worst possible outcome: confidence without protection.

The too-easy promise

There is an entire market of low-cost portable detectors and apps that promise to sweep a room in minutes. The appeal is obvious: cheap, fast and independent of anyone. The problem is that the promise does not hold up against the physics of the problem.

Finding hidden devices reliably requires sensitivity, frequency range, signal discrimination and method. None of that fits in a bargain-bin electronic keychain or in software running on your phone.

What these gadgets cannot see

Cheap detectors tend to react to any field and trigger false positives on ordinary electronics, producing noise without conclusion. Worse: they are blind to devices that record locally without transmitting and to electronics that are powered off at the time of the sweep.

Phone apps are even more limited. The phone's sensor does no real spectrum analysis, does not reliably detect lenses and has no NLJD. Running the app and finding nothing does not mean there is nothing; it means the tool is incapable of finding it.

The real cost of false security

The worst outcome of an amateur sweep is not wasting a little money: it is walking away convinced the environment is clean when it is not. That false confidence makes a person drop their guard exactly where they should be careful, and the harm happens under the impression of protection.

For those with wealth, this illusion is expensive. A sensitive conversation held in a room mistakenly deemed safe is worth far more to the adversary than any gadget saved.

What separates theater from protection

A serious sweep combines professional instrumentation, spectrum analysis with equipment such as the Rohde & Schwarz FSH8 and Aaronia SPECTRAN V6, the REI ORION 2.4 HX NLJD, line inspection with the REI TALAN 3.0 and a FLIR thermal camera, conducted with method and experience.

The difference is not in the device you bought; it is in the ability to interpret signals, reconstruct how a device got there and close the vulnerability. We deliver a confidential report and a shielding plan, with absolute discretion. Real security does not come from an app: it comes from method.
