Professional sweep vs. internet-bought detector: why the gadget fails

The popular device combines two simple things: an LED that helps you see the glint of a lens and a crude RF field meter that blinks near any signal source. Neither function comes close to a technical analysis.

The RF meter cannot tell a listening transmitter apart from your router, your microwave, or the phone on the next desk. It beeps at everything and therefore beeps at nothing useful. The user learns to ignore the alarms precisely when one of them would be real.

The gadget is blind to the powered-off device, because it has no non-linear junction detection. It is blind to the recorder that only stores, to the scheduled camera, to the implant in standby. It also cannot do direction finding, cannot separate legitimate signals from suspicious ones, and inspects neither phone line nor cabling.

For those with wealth and exposure, the cost of a leaked conversation, an anticipated deal, or a violated intimacy exceeds any sweep by many orders of magnitude. The gadget saves in the wrong place.
