Why detecting powered-off devices changes everything

Most detection gear only sees what transmits. But the most dangerous threats stay quiet. Detecting powered-off electronics is what separates a real sweep from security theater.

Almost everyone's blind spot

The intuitive idea of 'looking for a signal' has a serious flaw: a device is only visible via radio frequency while it is transmitting. A recorder that merely stores audio on a card, a camera programmed to wake only at night, or an implant deactivated during the sweep are, to an RF detector, invisible.

Competent spies know this. They schedule, power down remotely, or use devices that record locally and offload the data later. Relying on signal detection alone is looking for the thief precisely when he has decided to stand still.

How non-linear junction detection solves it

A non-linear junction detector, like the REI ORION 2.4 HX, does not look for a signal: it looks for electronics. It emits a wave and listens for the characteristic echo produced by semiconductors, the junctions present in any circuit, whether it is on, off or even without a battery.

In practice this means finding the board of a microphone hidden inside a wall, the chip of a dormant camera behind a mirror, or the electronics of an unpowered tracker. The device responds to the physics of the component, not to its willingness to transmit.

Why this changes the game

Detecting the powered-off inverts the advantage. The adversary can no longer simply 'switch off' the threat at inspection time. It does not matter whether the device is in standby, scheduled, or reserved for a future meeting: the junction is still there.

That is why a sweep that does not include NLJD is, at best, partial. It may declare an environment clean only because the threat happened, at that instant, to be silent.

The layers that work together

The non-linear junction detector does not work alone. It combines with the FLIR thermal camera, which catches the heat of a circuit actually in use, and with spectrum analysis, which captures what is transmitting. Each layer covers the other's blind spot.

It is this overlap that gives the result confidence. On or off, transmitting or silent, generating heat or cold: together, the methods leave the threat no safe state in which to hide.

What to demand from whoever sweeps your home

When hiring, ask directly: does the sweep include non-linear junction detection? If the answer is no, you are paying to watch the adversary only while he chooses to be seen. That is the difference between an elite service and a stroll with a gadget in hand.

We treat detection of the powered-off as standard, not as an add-on. In high-risk environments, it is precisely the silent device that tends to matter most, and that is the one we prioritize finding.

You may be under surveillance right now.
